A founding shareholder of Woolls Peer Dollinger & Scher, Greg is an accomplished trial lawyer. He began his career in the construction arena, including defense of claims against sureties and representing subcontractors embroiled in contract and other job-site disputes. His practice expanded to include defense of a wide variety of general liability claims against insureds, including personal injury, employment, construction defect and other business disputes. Building on those successes, Greg assumed representation of insurance companies in coverage litigation involving both first party and third party claims, including claims alleging tortious breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing – a focus which continues today.
Greg's diverse trial practice continues to involve bad faith, declaratory relief, subrogation, unfair business practices, general business disputes, employment, personal injury, wrongful death, premises liability and professional negligence claims. He tries cases throughout California, notably serving as lead counsel for an insurer client in a five month Los Angeles trial of a claim the State of California brought alleging unfair and unlawful business practices and seeking $200,000,000 in restitution. He received the Southern California Super Lawyer designation in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Greg has taught trial techniques for various groups, including the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.
A Los Angeles native born in 1961, Gregory Scher attended the University of Hawaii, where he served consecutive terms as President of the student union before obtaining his B.A in philosophy and political science in 1984. Greg interned with the Hawaii Governor's office, liaising with the American Samoa legislative committee charged with rewriting the territorial constitution. He returned to California and earned his J.D. from King Hall School of Law at the University of California - Davis in 1988, admitting to the California Bar that same year. He is admitted to practice before all California courts, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal.
